[ Thumbnail Browser ]

The Thumbnail Browser lets visitors to your page view a collection of images using small preview images (thumbnails) to navigate.

For this tutorial, we assume that you understand how to use FrontPage, For basic help, take a look at the Guest Counter Tutorial which has a lot more detail.

[Instructions for Notepad]

To get your Thumbnail Browser working as quickly as possible, simply follow the step-by-step instructions listed below.

  1. Create a new Notepad document. Give the page a heading;

    My Photo Album

    seems appropriate at this stage.

  2. On a new line, enter the text below:

Click Here to see my holiday snaps.

Use your mouse to highlight the "click here" on the first line of text. Whilst the text is still highlighted, select "Insert" then "Hyperlink" from the FrontPage toolbar. In the new window, go to the URL box and type the following:

    /zisp/thumbnail

  3. Now save the web page (for now, call it "my_photos.html") and upload it to your web site.

  4. Next, upload your new Image Banner page to your web site, open your Internet browser, and view the page. At this stage, you will only see the message:

No image files in directory /images/

The Dynamic Tool has created a new directory (called "images") in the home directory of your web site. This directory is for you to put your images in.

  5. You now need to upload your image files. These should be placed in the "images" directory.

You can use either gif or jpg image files with this tool. The file names ought to end with the correct 'extension', i.e. ".gif" or ".jpg". If the thumbnail browser cannot read a file, it will display a little 'skull-and-crossbones' image, like this:

  6. Now you can return to the Thumbnail Browser to view your images. The first time you visit this page, all of the thumbnails are created; at this stage they may be a strange shape. When you reload the page, you'll always see them in the correct shape.

    Thumbnail Browser Options

Well done! You've mastered the bare essentials. There are a few other things that you can do with your Thumbnail Browser. These are listed below:

    • Update your gallery. You may want to replace images with newer versions of the same image. You must tell the thumbnail browser to generate new thumbnails.

    • Change your Thumbnail Browser's appearance. You can customise the look of your Thumbnail Browser by using templates.

    • Use multiple Thumbnail Browsers. You can have many different Thumbnail Browsers for multiple galleries.

For instructions on how to perform these tasks, you will need to see the Dynamic Tools Reference Section on Thumbnail Browser.
