[ Guest Book ]
The Guest Book lets visitors to your page leave comments in a
public guestbook.
For
this tutorial, we assume that you know the bare essentials of
FrontPage. For basic help, take a look at the
Guest Counter Tutorial which has
a lot more detail.
[Instructions for Notepad]
To get your Guest Book working as quickly as possible,
simply follow the step-by-step instructions listed below.
- Create
a new FrontPage page. This will give you a new Dynamic Tools
workroom. Give the page a heading;
seems appropriate at this stage.
- Enter
some descriptive text, such as

- Use
your mouse to highlight the "Click here" on the first line of text.
Whilst the text is still
highlighted, select "Insert" then "Hyperlink"
from the FrontPage toolbar. In the new window, go to the URL box and
type the following:
Do the same to the "Click here" on the second line of text, making
it a hyperlink to:
- Next,
save your workroom web page (as something sensible, like
"guest_book.html"), and upload it to your web site (for
help with this, see your ISP documentation). Using your Internet
browser, view this new page on your web site:
- There is still one step left before your guestbook will work. You must
create an empty guestbook file. This file will be used to store the entries
for each visitor. Create a new, empty FrontPage page, and save it as a file
named '_zisp_/gbook.txt'. Then, upload this to your web site.
- Click on your "Click here to leave a message"
hyperlink. Dynamic Tools will create a Guest Book "enter
message" page for you! It should look something like this:
Go ahead and experiment with the guestbook. You can even delete
entries in the guestbook, but you'll need to look at the reference
guide to find out how!
Guest Book Options
Well done! You've mastered the bare essentials. There are a few other things
that you can do with your Guest Book. These are listed below:
- Clear
the contents of your Guest Book. You may want to start again
from scratch, particularly if you've just entered loads of test
messages!
- Manually
edit the messages in your Guest Book.
You might want to remove comments
left by some visitors.
- Change
your Guest Book's Appearance.
You can customise the look of your guestbook and tailor the questions
your visitors are asked by using templates.
- Use multiple Guest Books.
You can have lots of different guestbooks for lots of different
topics.
For
instructions on how to perform these tasks, you will need to see the
Dynamic Tools
Reference Section on Guest Books.
